Weekly Colombian Player Rankings | August 27 – September 2

Sorry for the late post — there’s a lot of content to get through this week! The rankings still follow the same timeline, covering matches from Wednesday of last week to Tuesday of this week (August 27 – September 2). Between the heavy slate of games and my own vacation travels, it took a bit longer to put this one together. But trust me, it was worth the wait: we had Colombians shining across Europe, MLS, and South America, with some truly decisive performances that shaped big results for their clubs.

10th – Mateo Cassierra

Despite not starting as much this season for Zenit, Cassierra continues to show why he’s one of the most reliable Colombian finishers in Europe. Coming off the bench for just 26 minutes, he still managed to score in Zenit’s 2-0 win over Nizhny Novgorod. That strike was already his 4th goal in six Russian league matches. With this kind of efficiency, it’s hard to imagine the coach keeping him out of the starting XI for long.

9th – Jhon Córdoba

One of the strikers in contention for Colombia’s No. 9 shirt had an eventful week. Córdoba first featured in the Russian Cup, where Krasnodar defeated Sochi 4-2 away. He only played 26 minutes but still made his mark, grabbing an assist and nearly scoring himself as he struck the woodwork. In the league, however, things got complicated. Facing CSKA Moscow, Córdoba scored Krasnodar’s only goal but was sent off in the 56th minute. Up until that red card, he was a handful for the opposition, winning 7 of 11 duels and constantly causing problems. He now has 4 goals and 1 assist in 7 matches this season, but discipline will be key if he wants to secure that starting striker role for the national team.

8th – Juan Otero

Juan Otero has quietly been one of the standout Colombians in Europe’s second-tier leagues this season. Playing for Sporting Gijón in Spain, he notched his fourth assist in just three games, this time helping his side secure a 1-0 home win over Cultural Leonesa. Otero created three chances in the match and won 7 of 9 duels, showing both creativity and grit. While the winger pool for Colombia is extremely competitive, if he continues at this rate, he may just force his way into the Selección conversation.

7th – Kevin Castaño

Castaño had a demanding but productive week with River Plate, featuring in two matches. First came the Copa Argentina round of 16, where River played to a 0-0 draw but advanced on penalties. He played the full match and held his own. His real standout performance, though, came against San Martín San Juan in a 2-0 league win. Castaño bossed the midfield with 91% pass accuracy from 79 passes, created two chances, won 11 of 16 duels, and completed 4 of 5 tackles. It was an all-action display that proved how integral he can be for River in controlling matches.

6th – Steven Alzate

After recently making the move to MLS, Alzate made his first start for Atlanta United and immediately gave fans something to get excited about. He picked up an assist in Atlanta’s 1-0 win over Nashville, and his all-around game was sharp. Alzate completed his only dribble, won all three of his tackles, and came out on top in 5 of 6 duels. It was a strong case for keeping his spot in the starting XI, and if he keeps producing like this, Atlanta might have just found a key piece for the rest of their season.

5th – Daniel Muñoz

It’s becoming routine to say, but Daniel Muñoz remains absolutely vital for Crystal Palace. The Colombian right-back helped Palace qualify for the Conference League after a 0-0 draw with Frerikstad, following their 1-0 win in the first leg. He was rock solid defensively with 4 of 5 successful tackles and 7 of 10 duels won, while also creating a chance. Then, against Aston Villa, Muñoz produced another immense performance in a 3-0 away victory. He created a big chance, won 5 of 6 tackles, and added 7 more duels to his tally. Week in and week out, Muñoz shows why he’s one of Palace’s most complete players.

4th – Juergen Elitim

Elitim may not be a household name, but he continues to show why Legia Warszawa trust him as a key player. In Europa Conference League qualifying against Hibernian, his side looked set for elimination, trailing 3-1 on the night. Then, in the 93rd minute, Elitim struck a crucial goal to take the match into extra time, where Legia ultimately secured qualification. That goal was massive—not just for Legia, but for Polish football in general. Though he only featured for 20 minutes in their 2-1 league loss to Cracovia afterwards, his heroics earlier in the week more than earned him a high spot in this ranking.

3rd – Luis Díaz

Díaz remains the only player to land in the top three of every Cafetero del Norte ranking so far, and this week he once again delivered for Bayern. He played two matches, first in the DFB Pokal against Wehen Wiesbaden, where Bayern scraped a 3-2 win. Díaz impressed with 91% pass accuracy from 76 passes, two key passes, three successful dribbles, and six duels won. The downside? He missed several clear chances that could have made the game more comfortable. In the Bundesliga against Augsburg, he found the net for his second league goal of the season and added another strong performance—2 successful dribbles, 6 of 11 duels won, and a chance created. If he can tidy up his finishing, Díaz could take his game to an even higher level, but it’s encouraging to see him playing well every week.

2nd – Yeimar Gómez

Gómez might not be a familiar name to all fans, but the Seattle Sounders defender had a week to remember. First, in the Leagues Cup semifinal, he was outstanding in a 2-0 away win over LA Galaxy, winning 9 of 12 duels and his only tackle. Then came the final against Messi’s Inter Miami, where Gómez was again immense as Seattle lifted the trophy with a 3-0 victory. He won all three of his tackles and all four of his duels in that match, showing complete dominance at the back. With performances like these, it’s no wonder he earned his first Colombia cap in 2022, and perhaps more may be on the way.

1st – Davinson Sánchez (Cafetero of the Week)

Consistency has been Davinson Sánchez’s calling card this season, and this week he elevated his impact further. Playing in Galatasaray’s 3-1 win over Rizespor, Sánchez not only delivered his usual defensive solidity—winning 8 of 12 duels and 2 of 3 tackles—but also got on the scoresheet with his first goal of the season. Even without a clean sheet, he was the standout performer and once again proved why he’s Mr. Consistent. For the third consecutive week, Sánchez features in this ranking, and this time he rightfully claims the Cafetero of the Week award.

Honorable Mentions

Santiago Arias – Arias impressed in Bahia’s 1-0 win over Fluminense in the Copa do Brasil, where he was a defensive wall with three tackles and 9 of 11 duels won. However, he and the Bahia backline struggled in their 5-1 league defeat to Mirassol.

Jhohan Romaña – The San Lorenzo defender helped secure a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Huracán, winning 5 of 6 duels. While the result wasn’t ideal, the defensive performance was solid and keeps him in the conversation.

Final Thoughts

This week once again shows the depth of Colombian talent making an impact worldwide. From veterans like Davinson Sánchez and Daniel Muñoz showing their consistency, to under-the-radar names like Yeimar Gómez and Juergen Elitim delivering clutch performances, the Cafeteros continue to raise their stock.

As always, some players just missed out, but that only speaks to how competitive these rankings are becoming. Who impressed you the most this week? Do you agree with Davinson taking Cafetero of the Week, or would you have given it to Yeimar after lifting the Leagues Cup? Let me know your thoughts in the comments — and stay tuned for next week’s rankings.
