Top 10 Colombian Players of the Week (Aug 13–19, 2025): Luis Suárez, Luis Díaz, Kevin Serna Stand Out
Welcome to the very first edition of our Weekly Colombian Player Rankings. Each week, we’ll be spotlighting the best performances from Colombians playing both at home in the Liga BetPlay and abroad in leagues across the world. The goal of this series is to track how our players are performing on a week-to-week basis, celebrate their successes, and give context to their form as many of them fight for places in their clubs’ starting elevens and, ultimately, for spots in the Selección Colombia.
For this opening edition, we’re focusing on matches played between Wednesday, August 13th and Tuesday, August 19th. The list counts down from 10th place to 1st, with each entry breaking down not just the stats—like goals, assists, pass accuracy, and duels won—but also the overall influence and importance of the player’s performance. At the end, we’ve also included an Honorable Mentions section, recognizing those who had strong weeks but just missed out on making the top 10. Make no mistake—this week there was no shortage of standout Colombian performances to choose from.
10. Christian Borja

Christian Borja continues to make a case for himself as one of the left backs fighting for a spot in Colombia’s World Cup squad. He was key in Club América’s 3-1 away victory over Tigres UANL, registering an assist and contributing defensively with one clearance, one interception, and two tackles. Borja also maintained 88% passing accuracy out of 34 attempts. At 32 years old, he’s still proving he has the level to compete, and with two assists already this season in just four matches, he may well earn consideration for a national team call-up ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
9. Daniel Muñoz

Daniel Muñoz has started his season at Crystal Palace in fine form, already lifting a trophy alongside fellow Cafetero Jefferson Lerma (for more, read – https://cafeterodelnorte.com/how-colombians-feel-crystal-palace-community-shield/).This weekend, he played the full match in Palace’s impressive 0-0 draw away at Chelsea, covering 10 kilometers and showing his defensive reliability with four clearances, two interceptions, and two tackles. He also won seven of his 11 duels and completed one of his two dribble attempts. Muñoz is an integral piece of this Palace side, serving as their starting wingback, and his consistency will be just as vital for the Selección.
8. Joider Micolta

Joider Micolta, the 23-year-old winger on loan at La Equidad from América de Cali, had his best match of the season so far. Playing 82 minutes in Equidad’s 2-1 win over Llaneros, he provided both a goal and an assist, directly influencing the outcome of the match. Known for his breakout with Bucaramanga in 2024 when he helped them win the Liga BetPlay Apertura, Micolta has now established himself as a starter for Equidad. Performances like this suggest he has the potential to develop into a class winger, perhaps pushing for a move abroad or even a future national team call-up.
7. Jherson Mosquera
Since returning to Newell’s Old Boys from Medellín, Jherson Mosquera has had more of a rotation role, but this weekend he proved his value once again. Playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw away against Defensa y Justicia, Mosquera scored the equalizer and was rock-solid defensively. He recorded four clearances, two interceptions, three tackles, and won 80% of his duels (eight in total). His contributions were crucial in securing the draw, and while Medellín could certainly use his quality back home, continuing to play at this level in Argentina could help him regain a regular starting spot.
6. Brayan Rovira
Though not the most widely recognized name, Brayan Rovira delivered a standout performance for Tolima in their 3-1 win over Millonarios. The midfielder, who has represented Colombia at youth level and enjoyed spells both domestically and briefly in Chile, scored his second goal of the season. While his first effort came off the woodwork and was ultimately given as an own goal, Rovira still played a commanding role in midfield. He had 77 touches, completed an astounding 98% of his passes (59 out of 60), and was flawless in his two long-ball attempts. With one key pass and two tackles, Rovira dictated the tempo of play, a true Rolls Royce performance that was central to Tolima’s big win.
5. Juan Fernando Quintero

Juan Fernando Quintero had a busy week with River Plate, featuring in both the Copa Libertadores and the domestic league. In the 0-0 first-leg draw against Libertad, Quintero came on at halftime and impressed with 55 touches, 84% pass accuracy, a key pass, and two successful dribbles. He followed that up with a start against Godoy Cruz in the league, where River ran out 4-2 winners. Quintero notched his first assist since rejoining River, setting up Galoppo in stoppage time of the first half before being substituted at the break. Across both matches, he showcased his creativity and technical brilliance. If he continues to build rhythm and minutes, Quintero could force his way back into Néstor Lorenzo’s plans for Colombia.
4. Davinson Sánchez

Davinson Sánchez has begun the season strongly with Galatasaray, helping them to a 3-0 victory over Karagümrük and recording his second clean sheet of the campaign. Playing 81 minutes, Sánchez was dominant defensively, winning 100% of his duels (five in total) and both of his tackles. He also had 90 touches, completing 82 passes at a 90% accuracy rate. These numbers underscore his reliability at the back, and if he maintains this form, Sánchez will be crucial not only for Galatasaray’s season but also for Colombia’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
3. Luis Díaz
Luis Díaz scored his first goal for Bayern Munich in their 2-1 victory over Stuttgart, securing the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup. His header was decisive and well-taken, marking an important milestone as he opens his account with the German giants. While his stats weren’t the flashiest—90% pass accuracy, one dribble completed out of four attempted—his relentless work rate stood out. Díaz bombed up and down the pitch, contributing significantly on the defensive end, even if Bayern’s tactics had him defending more than many fans would like. His commitment and impact in a final of this magnitude place him high on this week’s ranking, even if Kevin Serna slightly edged him in performance. This goal will hopefully be the first of many as Díaz looks to win both trophies and hearts in Munich.
2. Luis Javier Suárez
Luis Javier Suárez takes the top spot this week after a brilliant display in Sporting Lisbon’s 6-0 demolition of Arouca. Playing 81 minutes, Suárez netted his first two goals for the club, one from the penalty spot and another with a superb finish on his weaker left foot. He also posted an 89% pass accuracy across 18 passes, won half of his duels (eight total), and completed one successful dribble from three attempts. Beyond the stats, it was encouraging to see him settling so quickly in Portugal. After missing the Portuguese Super Cup, Suárez has responded with two strong league starts, and if he keeps this trajectory, he could become an even bigger star at Sporting than Viktor Gyökeres.
1. Kevin Serna
Kevin Serna has been nothing short of sensational for Fluminense. In the 2-1 win over Fortaleza, he played the full 90 minutes and ran the show — assisting both of Flu’s goals, first setting up Germán Cano in the 9th minute and then feeding Canobbio in the 64th. His creativity stood out as he produced four key passes, completed both of his dribbles, and won 75% of his duels (12 in total). Already with three league goals this season, Serna is stepping up big in the absence of Jhon Arias.
And just when it seemed like he couldn’t top that, Serna delivered again on Tuesday, August 19, in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 second leg. Fluminense beat América de Cali 2-0 to knock the Colombians out, with Serna opening the scoring and once again earning Man of the Match before coming off in the 78th minute. He was clinical and efficient: 91% pass accuracy (11 passes attempted), 2 chances created (including one big chance), and 3 of 5 dribbles completed.
With back-to-back standout performances, Serna has propelled himself into our number one spot this week. Performances like these surely put him firmly on Néstor Lorenzo’s radar for the Colombian national team. Hopefully, he keeps up his performances and continues this impressive run of form.
Honorable Mentions
Camilo Vargas
Camilo Vargas had a mixed outing in Atlas FC’s 3-3 draw against Querétaro. While conceding three goals prevented him from making the top 10, he did register a rare goalkeeper assist, showing his ability to influence play beyond just shot-stopping. Unfortunately, the result and defensive lapses overshadowed what could have been a standout performance.
Rafael Santos Borré
It was a tough week for Rafael Santos Borré as Internacional faced Flamengo twice. In the Copa Libertadores round of 16 first leg, he only played 13 minutes in a narrow 1-0 loss. A few days later, he started in the league rematch, playing the full 90 and managing to score, though his side fell 3-1. While Borré got on the scoresheet, the back-to-back defeats kept him just outside the main list this week.
Óscar Estupiñán
Óscar Estupiñán made his mark in Juárez’s 2-1 away win over Guadalajara, converting a penalty in the 64 minutes he played. His contribution was important in securing the three points, but given the limited impact outside of the spot-kick, he narrowly missed inclusion in the week’s top 10.
Mateo Cassierra
Mateo Cassierra was both frustrated and decisive in Zenit’s 2-2 draw with Spartak Moscow. After missing a penalty, he redeemed himself by scoring later in the match during his 45 minutes on the pitch. While his resilience was commendable, the limited minutes and penalty miss left him just short of cracking the main rankings.Kevin Castaño
Kevin Castaño is quietly establishing himself as a consistent presence at River Plate. He featured in both matches this week, playing 45 minutes in the 0-0 draw against Libertad in the Copa
