Weekly Canadian Player Rankings | August 27 – September 3
Sorry for posting this week’s rankings a little later than usual! With so much content to cover (and a short vacation mixed in), it took a bit longer to put everything together. But as always, we’re sticking to the same timeline — matches from Wednesday, August 27 to Tuesday, September 3. This week saw some standout Canadian performances across MLS, Europe, and beyond, and one familiar face earned our Canadian of the Week. Let’s dive in.

5. Dayne St. Clair
Some critics, like Steven Caldwell, have been vocal about Canadian goalkeepers having inconsistent seasons, but this week Dayne St. Clair showed his quality. In Minnesota’s 1-1 draw against Portland Timbers, St. Clair was a key reason his team came away with a point. Portland fired 16 shots, with six on target, but St. Clair made six saves to keep them at bay. Unfortunately, the goal he conceded was an own goal — harsh luck for him considering how well he played. With more performances like this, St. Clair can silence the doubters and prove his worth for both club and country.
4. Mathieu Choinière
It seems LAFC’s manager is putting real trust in Choinière, who earned his second consecutive start — and this time played the full 90 minutes. Despite LAFC’s 2-1 home loss to San Diego FC, Choinière was a bright spot in the midfield. He finished with an impressive 93% pass accuracy, won six of eight duels, and completed two of three tackles. While the result wasn’t what LAFC hoped for, they remain in a strong position to push for the playoffs. Performances like this from Choinière could make a big difference down the stretch.
3. Luc De Fougerolles
The promising young Canadian defender has had a solid start to the season, and this week was no different. While FCV Dender fell 3-1 away to Sporting Charleroi, De Fougerolles stood out once again. He won four of his five duels and even provided the assist for Dender’s lone goal. This loan move has been perfect for him, giving him valuable minutes and allowing his game to develop, even if the team’s results haven’t matched his individual performances. If he keeps this up, we could very well see him step into a starting role for Canada in the near future.
2. Promise David
The young Canadian striker continues to live up to his name. Although he hasn’t nailed down a starting role yet this season, he keeps showing flashes of quality and making a case for more minutes. In Union St. Gilloise’s 2-0 win over Anderlecht, Promise only played 28 minutes but managed to score with just 12 touches on the ball. He also won three of his five duels in the match. On the other side, Nathan Saliba featured for Anderlecht but was sent off in the 81st minute. This is now Promise’s second goal in just four matches, all with limited playing time. If he keeps this up, it feels only a matter of time before he earns a starting spot.
1. Jonathan Osorio
Fellow Cafetero Del Norte (Canadian with Colombian roots) made us proud this week. Osorio scored the tying goal in TFC’s 1-1 draw against archrivals Montreal. Beyond the goal, he could have added another, as he missed a big chance but still created two opportunities, completed all three of his dribbles, won one of two attempted tackles, and came out on top in five of six total duels. He was excellent in that game. While he won’t be present for the CMNT’s September matches, Jesse Marsch has made it clear that Osorio is in his World Cup plans — and if he keeps performing like this, that confidence will be more than deserved. A well-earned Canadian of the Week.
Honorable Mentions
Osaze De Rosario
If Osaze were eligible for the Canadian national team, he would’ve been first on this list. Son of Canadian legend Dwayne De Rosario, Osaze came through York United in the CPL before making the move to Seattle Sounders — and what a week he just had. He scored in two massive games: first in the Leagues Cup semifinal, where Seattle beat LA Galaxy 2-0 away, and then again in the final, where Seattle stunned Messi’s Inter Miami 3-0 to lift the trophy. It’s a shame he represents Guyana instead of Canada, but as a fellow Canadian, we still wish him the best in his career.
Tajon Buchanan
Tajon continues to make his mark at Villarreal, where it looks like he may secure the starting right-wing spot this season. In Villarreal’s 1-1 draw away to Celta Vigo, he played 78 minutes, created a chance, and impressed defensively by winning four of his five tackles while also taking seven of 14 total duels. It wasn’t as electric a performance as last week, but it’s clear Tajon is settling into his role. Plenty more standout moments are surely ahead.
Final Thoughts
Another week filled with highs, emerging talents, and familiar leaders carrying the maple leaf proudly. From Jonathan Osorio’s derby heroics to Promise David’s growing case for a starting role, it’s clear Canadian players continue to make waves at home and abroad.
