Canadian Duo Make Big European Moves: Jonathan David to Juventus & Nathan Saliba to Anderlecht
Despite a disappointing end to Canada’s Gold Cup campaign (read more in: https://cafeterodelnorte.com/canada-gold-cup-2025-loss-guatemala-penalties/), it’s been a week filled with positivity for some of Canada’s top talents. Earlier this week, 21-year-old Nathan Saliba secured a move to Europe, joining Belgian side Anderlecht. Yesterday, it was confirmed that 25-year-old Jonathan David will be signing with European giants Juventus. These are massive moves and a strong statement that top-tier clubs are starting to take Canadian players seriously — a promising sign for the future of the Canadian Men’s National Team.
Jonathan David to Juventus

During his five seasons at Lille, Jonathan David firmly established himself as one of Europe’s most consistent strikers. He netted 109 goals and provided 27 assists across all competitions. Though he never managed to win the Ligue 1 Golden Boot, he was a constant presence in the race.
After years of speculation and countless transfer rumors, David has finally made the jump — sealing a free transfer to Italian giants Juventus following the expiration of his Lille contract. His medical is scheduled for later this week.
This move is massive. Juventus boasts serious squad depth and plays in multiple competitions, including the Champions League. But with David’s quality and the fact that he’s only 25 — still not even in his prime — he should have no trouble earning significant minutes. He could very well be the missing piece Juventus needs to climb back to the top of Serie A.
With this transfer, Jonathan David becomes the first Canadian player to ever join Juventus, not only making history but potentially opening the door for more Canadian talent to follow.
Nathan Saliba to Anderlecht

After an impressive Gold Cup showing and strong performances with CF Montréal, 21-year-old Nathan Saliba has taken the next step in his career — joining Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League. In doing so, he follows a growing list of Canadian players who have developed in Belgium, including Jonathan David himself.
Saliba made his debut for Montréal at age 19, and while the club has struggled in recent seasons, his performances have remained consistent. His breakout moment came during this summer’s Gold Cup, where he scored twice and was one of Canada’s standout players in both opening matches (for more, read: https://cafeterodelnorte.com/canada-proves-a-point-in-dominant-6-0-win-over-honduras/ – https://cafeterodelnorte.com/canada-humbled-in-1-1-draw-vs-curacao/).
This move is critical for his development. Playing in a strong European league at such a young age will only accelerate his growth and potentially lead to even bigger opportunities in the future.
Closing Thoughts
With the transfer window having just opened, it’s exciting to already see two major Canadian moves. Both Jonathan David and Nathan Saliba are taking meaningful steps in their careers, and I genuinely believe they’ll thrive in their new environments.
Most importantly, these moves signal a bright future for the Canadian national team — one where more and more of our players are competing and succeeding at the highest levels of football.
What do you think? Are these good moves? Do you have any concerns about either transfer? Are there other Canadian players you’d like to see make a switch this summer? Drop your thoughts in the comments below — I’d love to hear from you.
