Reds on the Rise: TFC’s Latest Win Sparks Hope
On July 16, 2025, TFC pulled off a much-needed and impressive win to kick off their 4-game road trip. Facing the Western Conference leaders and MLS’s top-scoring team, San Diego FC, in California, Toronto silenced 23,514 home fans with a gritty 1–0 victory — handing San Diego just their third home loss of the season.
While the match lacked consistent action, from a TFC perspective it was an excellent performance. Defensively, they were outstanding — keeping a clean sheet against the league’s highest-scoring side. Though they had limited possession for large stretches of the game, when they did control the ball, they strung together good combinations and managed to create dangerous moments.
Starting Lineup
The lineup wasn’t surprising in terms of personnel, but the system and positioning of certain players raised eyebrows:
- Matthew Longstaff started on the left wing, but didn’t play a traditional winger role — instead dropping deep to provide defensive cover and playing short, conservative passes.
- Richie Laryea was deployed in a double pivot — a bit different from his usual role. Thanks to his versatility, this adjustment was intriguing and effective.
Match Highlights
18th minute – Dominguez wins a loose ball in San Diego’s half and lofts a beautiful through ball to Theodor Corbeanu, who beats his man and draws contact in the box. Penalty awarded.
20th minute – Corbeanu steps up and buries the penalty with composure.

Match Thoughts
It wasn’t the most thrilling match, but TFC executed their game plan to perfection. They stayed compact defensively, limiting San Diego to zero shots in the first half and just one on target the entire match. Their low block was frustrating for the home team to break down.
On the attacking side, while TFC had few chances, they showed real promise when they did have the ball. Their passing sequences looked sharp, and scoring early helped take pressure off their attack.
All in all, a solid performance. With three more road games to go, this win is a massive confidence booster.
Standout Performers
Theodor Corbeanu
With Bernardeschi and Insigne gone, Corbeanu has quickly become TFC’s most dangerous player — and he showed it here. He completed 67% of his dribbles, drew three fouls, and caused problems all match long. Defensively, he put in the work as well. He won the penalty and converted it — becoming TFC’s top scorer this season. The full package.
Maxime Dominguez
Since arriving at TFC, Dominguez has impressed with his composure, technical ability, and defensive strength. In this match, he often acted as the playmaker during TFC’s spells of possession. He made one key pass, completed all of his dribbles (1/1), and won 78% of his total duels. A rock in midfield and one to watch.
Alonso Coello
His stats may not jump off the page, but Coello was rock solid defensively. He made several crucial clearances, blocks, and interceptions — two of which were key in preserving the clean sheet. If he keeps playing like this, TFC’s low block will be tough for any team to crack.
Honorable Mentions
Richie Laryea – Adjusted well to a new role in the double pivot. He offered strong defensive coverage and added a dynamic element with runs through midfield. It’s great to have him back — let’s see if this becomes a regular position for him.
Tyrese Spicer – Came on in the 31st minute for Patretta and made an impact. Like many others, Spicer defended well, but also showed serious attacking potential with speed, strength, and confident dribbling. He could become a real threat — hopefully he earns more minutes as the season progresses.
What’s Next?
With this win, TFC has now lost just once in their last five matches. Momentum is building. They currently sit 12th in the Eastern Conference, 11 points off a playoff spot with 11 matches remaining. It’s a long shot, but recent performances suggest they might just be able to make a run.
Their next game is on July 19, 2025, against Nashville SC at 8:30 PM EST, away from home.
