TFC Lose Their Second Road Match
On July 19, 2025, TFC faced Nashville SC in Tennessee. The match was postponed due to weather, but an impressive 25,301 spectators stuck around, making for a fantastic atmosphere.
TFC came out organized and competitive, but after conceding the opening goal, they couldn’t do enough to salvage a result. This marked Toronto’s first loss on their 4-game road trip, following a strong 1-0 win against San Diego FC on July 16 (for more on that game, read: Reds on the Rise: https://cafeterodelnorte.com/tfc-vs-san-diego-fc-july-2025-road-win/).
Starting Lineup
The lineup was nearly identical to the one that started against San Diego FC, with only one change:
- Kobe Franklin replaced the injured Cristian Gutierrez (Petretta)
I thought the lineup was solid. My only critique: why is it so hard for Spicer to get starts? (Comment if you agree.)
Match Highlights
1st Half Highlights
- 14th minute: On a TFC freekick, Coello delivered the ball into the box. After a scramble, it fell to Domínguez, whose shot went just wide.
- 28th minute: Mukhtar fired a shot from outside the box. Sean Johnson made the save, but the rebound fell right to Sam Surridge, who tapped it in. 1-0 Nashville.
- 40th minute: A brilliant ball from Brugman found Surridge, who timed his run perfectly. Through on goal, Johnson did enough to disrupt the shot, and Rosted cleared it off the line. TFC got lucky there.

Final Thoughts
It wasn’t TFC’s best showing, but the stats suggest total Nashville dominance, which I don’t entirely agree with. TFC had a fair share of the ball—even if they didn’t do much with it—and controlled some portions of the game.
The goal they conceded was unfortunate, coming off a rebound after some solid defending. Still, TFC remained in the match throughout and had a few promising moments. Unfortunately, they couldn’t capitalize. In the end, it was a well-earned win for Nashville, who continue to sit near the top of the Eastern Conference.
Standout Performers
Unlike the San Diego match, there weren’t many standout performances here. But one player worth highlighting:
- Theo Corbeanu – He continues to be TFC’s most dangerous attacker. His ability to take on defenders and create chances stands out. It’s a shame he often lacks attacking support around him.
Honorable Mentions:
- Kosi Thompson – Though he only played 39 minutes, I thought he was solid defensively and active in possession. He looked devastated when he went off injured—hopefully, it’s not long-term.
- Jeisson Palacios (Nashville) – I know he’s an opponent, but as a fellow Colombian, I had to shout him out. He was excellent, constantly in the right position and responsible for several key clearances and interceptions.
What’s Next?
TFC remain 12th in the Eastern Conference, now 12 points off a playoff spot. While a playoff push still isn’t impossible, they’ll need a serious turnaround. Their next chance comes July 26, 2025, against Charlotte FC, who currently sit 7th, 14 points ahead. It’s a must-win for Toronto.
What did you think of the match? Do you believe TFC still have a shot at the playoffs?
Drop your thoughts in the comments! I’ll catch you after the Charlotte game.
