Canadians in European Competitions
Canadian players are making their presence felt like never before in European competitions. From Jonathan David leading the line for Juventus in the Champions League, to Tajon Buchanan shining at Villarreal, to Stephen Eustáquio representing Porto in the Europa League, Canadians are showing up on some of football’s biggest stages. This season offers a perfect chance to see how far they can push their clubs in Europe — whether it’s competing for titles or simply carving out minutes and making an impact. Here’s a breakdown of every Canadian featuring across the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, along with fixtures, predictions, and what fans can expect.
Champions League
Juventus – Jonathan David

- Vs Dortmund (H)
- Vs Villarreal (A)
- Vs Real Madrid (A)
- Vs Sporting CP (H)
- Vs Bodø/Glimt (A)
- Vs Pafos (H)
- Vs Benfica (H)
- Vs Monaco (A)
Juventus have a tough set of fixtures in the first round, but they should still make it through to the later stages. I’m projecting 15 points, which based on last year’s table would put them in the second round. Domestically, Juve have started very strong, sitting top of the league alongside Napoli and coming off an impressive 4-3 win over Inter. Jonathan David has also begun well, already contributing a goal and an assist in 3 matches. He will be crucial if Juventus want to go far in the Champions League. Their first match is on September 15, followed by a showdown against fellow Canadians Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi.
Bayern Munich – Alphonso Davies
- Vs Chelsea (H)
- Vs Pafos FC (A)
- Vs Club Brugge (H)
- Vs PSG (A)
- Vs Arsenal (A)
- Vs Sporting CP (H)
- Vs Union St. Gilloise (H)
- Vs PSV (A)
Bayern Munich face a tough set of fixtures in the opening stage of the Champions League, including a matchup with fellow Canadian Promise David of Union St. Gilloise. Even so, I fully expect them to qualify comfortably. I’m projecting 19 points, which based on last year’s tally would send them directly into the third phase of the tournament. From this list, Bayern are the clear favorites to lift the trophy.
They’ve started the season in fantastic form — already winning a trophy, remaining unbeaten in the league, and boasting an impressive +12 goal difference. Unfortunately for Canadian fans, Alphonso Davies is still sidelined, but the hope is that Bayern continue their strong run so he can return in the later stages and deliver more big moments, just like his famous goal against Real Madrid. Their first match comes against Chelsea on Wednesday, September 17.
Villarreal – Tajon Buchanan & Tani Oluwaseyi
- Vs Tottenham (A)
- Vs Juventus (H)
- Vs Manchester City (H)
- Vs Pafos (A)
- Vs Dortmund (A)
- Vs Copenhagen (H)
- Vs Ajax (H)
- Vs Bayer Leverkusen (A)
Villarreal could be a dark horse in this year’s Champions League, but it won’t be easy with such a tough group. I’m projecting 12 points, which would be just enough to reach the second round. The Yellow Submarine have started their league campaign well, collecting 7 points in 4 games and sitting 6th in La Liga. Tajon Buchanan has been electric, scoring a hat-trick in Villarreal’s 5-0 win over Girona — the kind of form fans will be hoping to see in Europe. Tani Oluwaseyi has had limited minutes so far, but hopefully this tournament gives him the chance to showcase his quality as a striker. Villarreal’s first match is on September 16.
Union Saint-Gilloise – Promise David
- Vs PSV (A)
- Vs Newcastle (H)
- Vs Inter (H)
- Vs Atlético Madrid (A)
- Vs Galatasaray (A)
- Vs Marseille (H)
- Vs Bayern Munich (A)
- Vs Atalanta (H)
Union Saint-Gilloise were handed an incredibly tough draw, making them one of the outsiders in this stage. Sadly, I can only predict 1 point for them, given the strength of their opponents. Still, they’ve been excellent in the Belgian league, sitting comfortably top of the table. Promise David has looked sharp since returning from a minor injury, scoring 2 goals in limited minutes. This competition could be his chance to break into the starting lineup and make a name for himself. Union’s first game is on September 16.
Europa League
FC Porto – Stephen Eustáquio

- Vs Salzburg (A)
- Vs Crvena Zvezda (H)
- Vs Nottingham Forest (A)
- Vs Utrecht (A)
- Vs Nice (A)
- Vs Malmö (H)
- Vs Rangers (H)
Porto are the strongest Canadian-represented side in this competition and should be considered among the favorites. I’m projecting 17 points, which would put them straight through to the third round. Porto have started the Portuguese league strongly, already beating Sporting and sitting at the top. Stephen Eustáquio has seen limited minutes so far, being used more as a rotational option, but this competition could be his chance to earn more playing time. Porto’s first match is on September 25.
Nice – Moïse Bombito
- Vs Roma (H)
- Vs Fenerbahçe (A)
- Vs Celta Vigo (A)
- Vs Freiburg (H)
- Vs Porto (A)
- Vs Braga (H)
- Vs Go Ahead Eagles (H)
- Vs Ludogorets (A)
Nice are one of the sides expected to go far, but their schedule is stacked with top opponents. I’m predicting 15 points, which would be enough to send them straight to the third round. They’ve had a decent start in Ligue 1 with 6 points from 4 games, but they’ll need to be at their best here. Moïse Bombito is currently sidelined with injury, but he’s expected back soon. Hopefully he can return to the level he showed last season, as both Nice and Canada will need him. Their first match is on September 24.
Rangers – Derek Cornelius
- Vs Genk (H)
- Vs Sturm Graz (A)
- Vs Brann (A)
- Vs Roma (H)
- Vs Braga (H)
- Vs Ferencváros (A)
- Vs Ludogorets (H)
- Vs Porto (A)
Rangers will hope to replicate their magical 2021/22 Europa League run where they reached the final, but this time the path looks much harder. I’m projecting 12 points, which should still get them into the second round. Their league form has been poor, with just 4 points from 5 matches, but they remain a dangerous side in Europe. Derek Cornelius recently made his debut, and as he gets more minutes, he could become a key player in defense. Rangers’ first match is on September 25.
Feyenoord – Cyle Larin
- Vs Braga (A)
- Vs Aston Villa (H)
- Vs Panathinaikos (H)
- Vs Stuttgart (A)
- Vs Celtic (H)
- Vs FCSB (A)
- Vs Sturm Graz (H)
- Vs Real Betis (A)
Feyenoord are another side with potential to go deep, but their group is filled with quality teams. I’m predicting 11 points, which should see them into the second round. They’ve started strongly in the Eredivisie, sitting comfortably in first place. Cyle Larin has yet to feature for his new club, but with the demanding schedule, this competition could be his chance to get minutes and hopefully goals. Feyenoord’s first game is on September 24.
Celtic – Alistair Johnston

- Vs Crvena Zvezda (A)
- Vs Braga (H)
- Vs Sturm Graz (H)
- Vs Midtjylland (A)
- Vs Feyenoord (A)
- Vs Roma (H)
- Vs Bologna (A)
- Vs Utrecht (H)
Celtic didn’t get the best of draws, with several strong opponents lined up. I’m predicting 12 points, which would be enough for the second round. Domestically, they’ve started brilliantly — top of the Scottish Premiership, still undefeated, and having conceded just one goal so far. However, they’ll be without Alistair Johnston until November due to injury, which is a big blow. Their first match is on September 24.
Conference League
Lausanne-Sport – Thelonius Bair
- Vs Breiðablik (H)
- Vs Ħamrun Spartans (A)
- Vs Omonia (H)
- Vs Lech Poznań (A)
- Vs KuPS Kuopio (A)
- Vs Fiorentina (H)
Lausanne-Sport are unlikely to make a deep run, but they impressed in qualifying by knocking out Beşiktaş. I’m projecting 8 points, which could be enough to sneak into the second round. Domestically, however, they’ve struggled badly with just 3 points from 5 matches, leaving them near the bottom of the table. Thelonius Bair made his debut on September 14, showing promise. If he can find form, he might just help Lausanne push further than expected. Their first game is on October 2.
Final Thoughts
This season is shaping up to be historic for Canadian footballers in Europe. Jonathan David and Juventus will be expected to challenge in the Champions League, while Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi’s Villarreal could be a surprise package. In the Europa League, Stephen Eustáquio, Cyle Larin, Moïse Bombito, and Derek Cornelius all have the chance to make meaningful contributions, while Thelonius Bair in the Conference League will be hoping to gain valuable experience and minutes. Whether it’s stars on the rise or players solidifying their roles at top clubs, Canadian talent is continuing to grow and prove itself on the continent. One thing is clear — fans of the Canadian men’s national team will have plenty to keep an eye on every European matchday.
