Richard Ríos Impresses as Palmeiras Stun FC Porto

Richard Ríos continues to prove he’s more than just a nice haircut, adding yet another strong performance to his growing repertoire. In Palmeiras’ FIFA Club World Cup opener against FC Porto — an enticing matchup despite ending goalless — Ríos was a constant nuisance on both sides of the pitch. He displayed composure, energy, and often dictated the tempo for Palmeiras throughout the match.

While many considered Palmeiras underdogs heading into this fixture, the Brazilian side showed they are a difficult matchup for any opponent. For much of the match, it was Palmeiras who posed the questions — retaining more possession and creating more chances.

At the half, Palmeiras had 52% possession to Porto’s 48%, along with 7 shots (3 on target) and an xG of 1.41. In contrast, FC Porto managed 5 shots (2 on target) with an xG of 0.42. Palmeiras’ dominance continued into the second half, registering 10 more shots (2 on target, 0.66 xG) compared to Porto’s 6 shots (1 on target, 0.37 xG). Though Palmeiras will be disappointed not to have secured the win, they can be proud of the performance they delivered.

Richard Ríos once again proved that he can perform at a high level — as he often does with the Colombian national team. He finished the match with a Sofascore rating of 7.5, the second highest on his team in this game. He completed 3 successful dribbles (joint-most in the match) with a 75% success rate, had a pass accuracy of 77% including one key pass, won 46% of his duels, and made 1 successful tackle.

There were two standout moments where Ríos nearly made a difference:

  • In the 40th minute, Ríos picked up the ball in midfield and delivered a beautiful through ball between defenders to Estevão, whose shot narrowly missed and hit the side netting.
  • In first-half stoppage time (45+1), Piquerez delivered a cross that found Ríos making a late run into the six-yard box. His initial shot was brilliantly saved by Claudio Ramos. The sequence continued with Mauricio firing a follow-up that was also denied by another Claudio Ramos save, the ball returns to Rios who beats a defender, and had his second shot cleared off the goal line by Francisco Moura.

This result leaves Group A wide open, with all four teams — Palmeiras, FC Porto, Inter Miami, and Egypt’s Al Ahly — tied on points, goals for, and goals against following Inter Miami and Al Ahly’s 0–0 draw on June 14, 2025.

It will be fascinating to see how this group unfolds. Based on this performance, Palmeiras and Richard Ríos have shown they’re capable of challenging even the biggest clubs. Their next test comes on June 19, 2025, at 12 PM EST against Al Ahly — a side that impressed in their opener. Later that day, FC Porto will face Inter Miami at 3 PM EST, in what’s shaping up to be a pivotal group stage.
