Top 5 Colombian Players: Group Stage – FIFA Club World Cup

  1. Jhon Arias

He tops the list for Colombians after an incredible group stage performance with Fluminense.

  • In the first match against European giants Borussia Dortmund, Arias earned a solid 7.5 Sofascore rating and was instrumental in securing a valuable 0-0 result against the group favorites.
  • The second game was his standout performance—he scored a golazo from a freekick, provided an assist, and claimed Man of the Match honors with a 9.1 rating in Fluminense’s 4-2 win over Ulsan HD.
  • In the final match, where Fluminense needed at least a draw to qualify, Arias once again rose to the occasion. He won the majority of his duels and earned his second Man of the Match award with a 7.7 rating in the hard-fought 0-0 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Arias played every minute of the group stage and finished with an average rating of 8.1. Next up: Fluminense faces Inter on June 30. Let’s see what more he can bring to the table.

  1. Nelson Deossa

Although his tournament didn’t start as strongly, Deossa’s performances improved with each game.

  • He came off the bench in the 58th minute during Monterrey’s 1-1 draw against European runners-up Inter, earning a 6.9 rating in limited minutes.
  • In the second game, he played the full 90 minutes in a tough 0-0 draw against River Plate, winning 59% of his duels and earning a 7.0 rating.
  • His best showing came in the final match—a 4-0 win over Urawa Reds—where he opened the scoring with a beautiful goal and was named Man of the Match with an 8.3 rating.

Deossa finished the group stage with an average rating of 7.4 and is the only other Colombian to score in the tournament so far. Monterrey now faces Borussia Dortmund on July 1—let’s hope he keeps up the momentum.

  1. Richard Ríos

Alongside Arias, Richard Ríos is one of Colombia’s brightest stars in this tournament and has delivered consistently for Palmeiras.

  • In the crucial opening win against FC Porto, Ríos was key in Palmeiras’ midfield, earning a 7.5 rating (check out our deeper dive: Richard Ríos Impresses as Palmeiras Stun FC Porto – Cafetero Del Norte).
  • Against Al Ahly, he followed it up with another solid performance in a 2-0 win, earning a 7.4 rating and winning 62% of his duels.
  • His final group stage match—against Inter Miami—wasn’t as dominant, but still solid. He got a 7.2 rating in the 2-2 draw, even if he couldn’t fully impose his game.

Ríos ended the group stage with an average rating of 7.37. Palmeiras takes on Botafogo next on June 28—expect another high-stakes battle.

  1. Stefan Medina
Stefan Medina

Like his teammate Nelson Deossa, Medina has been crucial to Monterrey’s impressive group stage campaign.

  • His center-back partnership with Sergio Ramos has been outstanding, helping Monterrey earn two clean sheets (vs River Plate and Urawa Reds) and limiting Inter to just one goal.
  • He posted a 7.2 rating against Inter, followed by 6.8 vs River Plate and 6.7 vs Urawa Reds, averaging 6.9 across all matches.

As Monterrey prepares for Dortmund, Medina’s experience and consistency will be more important than ever.

  1. Jerson Lagos
Jerson Lagos

Not many fans will know his name, but Jerson Lagos was a bright spot for Auckland City, the only semi-professional team in the tournament.

  • Just being there was already a win for the young Colombian, but Lagos also contributed the team’s only assist and helped them earn a historic draw.
  • He came off the bench in the 10-0 loss to Bayern Munich, managing a respectable 6.6 rating.
  • He started in the 6-0 loss to Benfica but struggled, receiving a 5.6 rating.
  • In the final match—Auckland’s 1-1 draw against Boca Juniors—Lagos provided the assist and earned a 7.1 rating.

While Auckland is out, Lagos’ journey is one of the best stories of the tournament so far.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Kevin Castaño – Had a great first match and was performing well in the second until he received a red card. Unfortunately, with River Plate now eliminated, he just misses out.
  • Gabriel Fuentes – Only featured in one match but delivered a strong performance against Ulsan HD. Could earn more minutes moving forward.
  • Kevin Serna – Another Fluminense player, he’s had solid minutes and performances so far. We’ll see if he can step up in the knockout stage.

  • I believe player match ratings provide a partial picture of each individual’s performance. However, the quality of the opponent also plays a role in determining the merit of a rating. Furthermore, players in different positions have varying degrees of influence and impact on the outcome of a match.

Arias & Rios displays have been extremely positive and consistent. Both are putting in performances worthy of a move to clubs in Europe.

Appreciate the comment — really good point. You’re right, ratings don’t always tell the full story, especially when you consider the opponent or the player’s role. I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future posts!
